5 quick tips for mental health during the pandemic

Here are five fast tips that have really helped my mental health and wellbeing in this crazy lockdown and isolation period during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

1. Entertain yourself!

Humour is really good therapy so just keep things light. Go for the things that you like to indulge in whether they’re books, podcasts, TV shows or creative projects.

2. Connect with others.

Make contact with the people who remind you of who you are. The social connection helps to keep you anchored. Talking to people you trust—friends, workmates, family, loved ones—can protect and boost your mental health. Laugh together, share your thoughts and emotions, reminisce, celebrate each other.

3. Do something nice for somebody else.

There’s a lot of research that suggests doing something kind for another person gives us even greater satisfaction than if we were to treat ourselves. So, in these crazy times, it could be something really small like a phone call or putting a flower on your neighbour’s doorstep.

4. Get moving.

There’s no doubt that exercise is great for mental health, so long as it’s the right kind of exercise for you. Make it enjoyable! This is a great time to try something new without the embarrassment of everyone else seeing you! If you don’t have access to your usual programs there is plenty of stuff on YouTube, or you could go to other people you know for recommendations.

If you don’t feel like doing your usual workout or fitness routine then just go for a stroll around the block. It’s really good to clear your mind. I like to go in the evening just before it gets dark. It’s a multi-sensory experience! And when you’re at home, honestly the hardest part is just putting your shoes on or rolling out your yoga mat.

5. Go easy on yourself!

Take time to rest when you need it. Listen to your body, sit with your thoughts and emotions—anything that’s coming up for you—because that’s how we can then process them.

These are extraordinary circumstances for everyone and we are all dealing with it in our own way. We all have our own battles, whether they’re big or small, so please just take care of yourself.
